Hey Kick Assers, I talk a lot in this space about kicking ass. I hope that you all had a kick ass weekends, I wish you all a kick ass week each week. But what does this mean? For me, I consider kicking ass to be a wide umbrella that fits a whole universe of kick ass sub categories. For example, Naomi Osaka this weekend made a kick ass decision. For those of you not in the know about tennis (I only know because my sister is obsessed and she keeps me updated), Naomi is at the top of the game right now. She made a decision to advocate for her mental health and opt out of media interviews (a requirement for all players at tournaments). Her decision came with a lot of hard consequences BUT she also made it clear that the price of ignoring her mental health was not something she was willing to compromise on. This is kicking ass, kick assers. This is how I define kicking ass. It is having the courage to do the hard shit that will make you unpopular with everyone else but yourself. Kicking ass means saying, "No. This situation doesn't work for me and it is making me ill so I won't be a willing participant in that." We have systems and institutions that are telling us every day to get back to normal, ignore the pain, get on board, and ignore your needs... and all of it requires us to sacrifice our authentic needs. Having the awareness to know how this makes you feel and then deciding to stand up to that pressure, can often feel impossible. For those who cave to the pressure they pay for it in burnout, depleted mental health, and even physical side effects. Advocating for your needs may be one of the scariest journeys you go on. That gauntlet is real and it sucks but staying silent costs you so much more. As you visit this space each week I want you to think about what kicking ass looks like to you. If you need to practice kick ass courage look to Naomi Osaka for inspiration. Kicking ass is about honoring your authentic self through courage, compassion, kindness, patience, humor, and so much more. Have you kicked ass recently? Share it with us and let us be inspired by your kick ass energy.
